This Chartres iconic residence is a witness of Jallerat family’s world whose tradition of service, dining, “art de vivre” has been pursued for 100 years.
Ideal hideaway in Chartres, Le Grand Monarque combines elegance, charm and luxury in a quiet, muffled and refinely decorated atmosphere.
In the 17th century, the house was named Auberge Sainte-Barbe and used to welcome merchants and travellers, some during the “Foire aux Barricades”. At the end of the century and throughout the 18th century, it has become a “Relais de Poste” with an ideal location halfway between Paris and the Loire, between the western regions, Orleans, Anjou, Maine and Touraine.
An authentic "Art de vivre"
Unmissable stopover for prestigious guests, Le Grand Monarque owes its name to King Henri IV, the only French king crowned within the cathedral of Chartres in 1594.
The Jallerat family has entered Le Grand Monarque scene in 1968: Georges and Geneviève Jallerat at first and 30 years later, their son Bertrand and his wife, Nathalie. Together, they will guide Le Grand Monarque to modernity.
Bertrand and Nathalie’s passion has made of this former post house a real institution in Chartres, an authentic and friendly place to meet and to celebrate. With their 5 children and the perspective of a third generation taking over, the Jallerat couple believes each guest and each team member is part of Le Grand Monarque’s big family, elevating together the hotel's reputation to its highest.

While Nathalie and Bertrand steer the ship, the expertise of our talented team members set in their sense of hospitality, service, well-being, gastronomy, and oenology.
As they have created these new venues in the French modern “art de vivre” way, Bertrand and Nathalie have strengthened this family house with an outstanding wine cellar and themed events that would gather winemakers, loyal guests, musicians, and visitors for moments of sharing that will remain anchored in memories.
